Egyptian activist Islam Abdel-Rahman’s letter to Russian Ambassador about last intervention of Syrian Army in Homs...
Dear Mr. Ambassador,
I usually begin my letters by expressing my pleasure to write them but I find the case different this time. I feel so disappointed and frustrated from the attitude the federation of Russia takes towards the massacre ongoing in Syria these days. I am not a Syrian citizen and aside from being an Arabic Muslim like the majority of the victims there, I have no direct relations with the country. But this is not my motivation to write this letter. I am an Egyptian who suffered since birth from what the Syrians have been suffering decades ago. We have suffered from oppression, corruption and inequality. This forced me and millions of Egyptians to go out to streets and squares protesting and risking our lives for something we missed for years and realized this is the time to regain it. Something called liberty. This is why I fully understand why the people in Syria go out in such massive demonstrations faced by this unprecedented brutality. I fully understand this but what I don’t understand is the attitude of your country towards the Syrian crisis.
The world including my people observed your attitude towards Gaddafi regime at Libya. The brutality was the same and the persistence for freedom was never less than their counterparts in Syria and unfortunately you stood with the wrong side. Your defense of Gaddafi regime in the midst of its heartless suppression of their people can never be justified by any cause. Unfortunately your government is committing the same mistake again with the Syrian people. Your flimsy excuses about respecting national sovereignty or international laws can never stand for a moment in front of the continuous massacre Al-Assad regime committing against the unarmed peaceful protesters and it can not stand for another moment in the light of the fact of your blatant interference in Georgia. Russia isn’t just turning a blind eye for what happen but now protecting criminals like Al-Assad and previously Gaddafi in UN and elsewhere. This makes Russia their partner in their crimes.
I am here not going to give a lecture about morals and human rights but I want to say that the voice of the people can no longer be suppressed or ignored. And in what called the Arab spring, it is the people who will shape their fate and their future. Those who lost a dear relative or friend or those who lost their home or shelter because of a tyrant like Al-Assad or Gaddafi will never forgive those who ignored the simplest rules of humanity to protect some interests on the expense of the blood of the people.
The Russian economic and strategic interests in the Middle East can no longer be maintained by defending such losers but can just be maintained by standing with the people and defending them not their oppressors. I guarantee you that these interests can really be threatened on the short and long term by the attitudes your government takes to help the continuity of such dictatorial regimes.
I am writing this letter to say it is never late. The government of Russia can have the chance to revise its policy towards such regimes. Who died are already dead but there are still thousands who can be saved if Russia choose to stand with the right side.
Silence is no more acceptable. Silence is part of the crime.
Yours,
Islam Abdel-Rahman
